And one from our After Session this weekend…. who would have thought a wedding in January would look like this??

After Session in the Woods – Birmingham Wedding Photographer

I love an “after session” ! The wedding and honeymoon is over, the pressure is off, and by the time we get to the after seession, we are old friends! This was the case here too! The wedding went perfectly and the after session was very laid back and fun. We met at Tannehill and I even talked her into the water. Of course, she didn’t want the dress wet, so we improvised. Beautiful bride and beautiful location… makes my job easy. :)

Tennis Anyone?? – Birmingham Wedding Photographer

We have been excited about this session for months! When this couple chose us for the wedding, they also signed up for a super fun after session. They met playing tennis at the Pelham Racquet Club so we had to incorporate this into pictures. We had a blast. I think we laughed the entire session. This is just a sneak peak… there are so many more!

Trash a Dress??? Why?? – Birmingham Wedding Photographer

Wikipedia defines “Trash the dress” as:  photography that contrasts elegant clothing with an environment in which it is completely out of place. It is generally shot in the style of glossy beauty and glamour photography. Usually brides decide to have pictures taken on the beach, but possibilities are endless. City streets, rooftops, garbage dumps, fields, and abandoned buildings are only few examples of trash the dress session locations. (Article here.)

I love what Today’s Bride Online says: The brides say it’s liberating, relieves wedding stress and is a unusual way to capture moments in her dress that aren’t so stiff, like the traditional snaps taken on the wedding day. Many modern brides say it’s an expression of their commitment to their groom; all the while choosing to place more value in the memories of the big day than the dress itself. Brides willing to trash the dress are adventurous; risk-takers who want out-of-this-world pictures. While some brides opt for a mild trashing that can be erased with a decent dry cleaning, others go for full destruction….  But at its core, Trash the Dress is all about natural reactions, spontaneity and feeling free to have fun and to laugh out loud. (Article here.)

Suite101.com defines Trash the Dress as: This style of after-wedding bridal portraits (which sometimes includes the groom), take place in a variety of unorthodox settings such as industrial parks, and urban areas, where the beauty and grace of a wedding dress against the back drop of a cold, and rough environment offers an interesting conflict, making for unusual and artistic photography. (Read more: “Trash the Dress: A New Tradition in Post Wedding Photography” )

At His Hands Photographs, we call it “The After Session”. We changed the name after too many brides looked horrified to think we wanted to trash their wedding dress! We tell our brides that we schedule the session for right after you come home from the honeymoon but before you get your dress cleaned. This helps us be a little more relaxed and allow us to get some fantastic portraits that you will cherish forever! We have the best time finding new places to have the session. Think state park, a train graveyard, downtown, etc. In the next few weeks we will be playing tennis with a bride and visiting a beautiful covered bridge. It is important to us for every “after session” to be unique. This is the time for you to be different. Did you wear you hair up for the wedding? For the after session, go for more casual hair and makeup. The point is to have fun, wear your wedding dress again, and have portraits LIKE NO ONE ELSE. So, yes, we love the after session. We won’t be trashing anyone’s dress unless they want us to but we will be giving our brides works of art like this:

We had such a fun time! They never said anything when we were excited about the parking deck as our last location. I know they thought we were crazy. But we all love the results. I told the bride I wanted to do something totally different and she was game! Unique and so much fun!

We were having fun with this one. I think it looks like a horror movie!

Our newsletter – Birmingham Photographer

Below is our newsletter…. if you didn’t get this then you need to sign up for our mailing list!!

Economic Stimulus Plan

Cory and I have thought long and hard about this and we think it’s time to go forward with it. We’ve been so blessed with some really great customers and have even made great friends through this business. We’ve also witnessed people going through some really hard times (including ourselves at one point or another) so we wanted to think of some way to use our business that could actually make an impact, even if it’s a small one, during a time when every penny can count. What we came up with was a referral program that has to be one of our most ambitious ideas yet. It’s one we don’t think anyone in our industry is even willing to think about in these hard economic times.

Here’s how it works. It’s as simple as leading people to us. For every person that books a portrait session with us because of your referral and pays a session fee, we’re going to hand you (or mail you) $20 in cash. And, get this, if you refer a wedding client to us we’ll give you $100 in cash the moment the retainer clears the bank. Spend it on a power or gas bill, give it away to your preferred charity, take someone you love to dinner, or just buy yourself a new trinket. It’s up to you.

From the Blog…

Where Do We Begin?!?!

Hi, everyone! It’s been an exciting couple of months and even though you haven’t heard much from us in the way of newsletters, you may have noticed a lot of activity in other areas. We’ve been having a blast on Facebook posting tons of pictures and having some great times with our fans. We’ve been holding contests, shooting weddings and portraits, and might even have a Guinness record in the works! Even with all of that going on, the most noticable thing is probably our blog posting…

365 Project

We’ve already announced this earlier on the blog, but wanted to share it here as well for those that have been MIA for a while :-) One of the new, fun things we’re doing is called the 365 project and the goal is to post on your blog at least once a day for an entire year! We started this adventure on January 1st and so far have been able to keep up with only one minor foul while we were out of contact in Louisiana shooting a wedding. Check out the blog to catch up if you haven’t been there lately.

Blog Comment Contest for a Portrait Session

This contest has run for almost a month and a half and it’s very near to a close. Ending on February 28th, any comment made on the blog counts as an entry in the contest. We’ll randomly pick a comment on the 1st of March and its author will have their portrait session fee waived! Basically you could win a free session for up to three people including the $25 print credit that comes with the session fee… all for making a comment on our blog! Too cool!

One Early Bird Will Win the…
Digital Portrait Session Contest

This contest ends on the 28th of February and is one of our best contests yet! If you’re planning on booking a Spring portait session, but are waiting for the weather to warm up then you’re probably going to miss out on Spring portraits… and this contest! There are a ton of people signing up now for their Spring portraits trying the beat the rush that always comes once the first warm spell hits. Don’t procrastinate and miss out!

And, as a little incentive to be an early bird on booking, we’re going to pick one person who books before the end of February and upgrade their session to a Digital session for free! What that means is you will receive an online gallery to share with your friends along with a free CD of all of your edited, fine-art portraits as digital files with rights to print as little or as much as you please. This CD retails at $900 making it our most valuable contest yet.

Happily Ever After… Session

For a lot of photographers this is the slowest time of the season, but for His Hands Photographs it never seemed to slow down for a second. We’ve been shooting weddings, engagement sessions and even some portraits in spite of the cold Winter weather, but one type of session has taken off like no other! It’s become VERY popular with our clients and have even had interest from people who have been married for years and still have their wedding dress. We call this hot, new type of session the “After Session” and many are choosing to forego their bridals for this.

How it works is we time a session in between the honeymoon and the dress cleaning. This way there isn’t nearly the amount of stress involved with having to keep the dress in pristine clean condition like you usually do during a bridal session. With the freedom to get the dress a little dirty we are able to create some of the most awesome, magazine-style images you could get by getting you into some really majestic locations. Check out our blog for examples and, like I said earlier, don’t think you have to be getting married to do a session like this. If you have your old wedding dress, or even if all you have is an evening gown, a prom dress, or a bridesmaid dress then you ought to try this out! Get in now while we’re still building a solid portfolio of After Sessions!
